-Book Introduction
Covering the word ‘dementia’
The story of all mothers and daughters living in the present
As we enter an aging society, 'dementia' has become a disease very close to us. It is known as a disease that affects 1 out of 10 Koreans over the age of 65 and suffers until death as there is no cure. Even though it is such a common disease, we do not try to look into their lives. From having dementia or having a family member with dementia, might you think that your life is already “end” and that there is only despair there? However, dementia patients and their families are clearly 'living'. Hurt each other, get frustrated every time, but stay together until the end, looking for small seeds of hope.
Hui's new comic, "It's Okay, It's Not Okay" contains the very process. Based on the author's experience, this work calmly looks into the lives of a mother with dementia and a daughter who is about to get married. In this cartoon, there is no beautification of the disease called dementia, no image of a daughter who is extremely filial, and no image of a mother overcoming the disease. However, extremely realistic episodes move the reader's heart more than any fantasy. It makes us ask ourselves, ‘What would I have done if it were me?’ countless times, and the family that does not give up on each other makes the world’s ‘it’s okay’ look at themselves. It also makes us think about the weight and value of taking responsibility for a family in modern society. Therefore, this work is not only the story of the dementia patient, but also the story of the entire family.
Dementia is no longer a disease that only affects special people. A diary of a mother and daughter who hates and hurts as much as they love and is neither okay nor sad, 『It’s okay, it’s not okay』. It was completed in August 2020 with the warm support of maniacs on the web platform Toomix, and will be introduced as an official book through the Four Seasons Comic Book Festival.
