Product introduction
Algeria is a country located on the southern shores of the Mediterranean and has been known as one of the hubs of Arab Andalusian music. It was “Cavalry of Ares” (Rice HMR-792), which was announced in 2008 by female singer Furia Aisi, that modernized the music of the Shauis, the indigenous people of the area and made me hear a fresh sound that no one had heard until then.
Furia Aisi was born in Aurès, a town in the Atlas Mountains in northeastern Algeria and once known as the starting point of the War of Independence. Also, she is not of mainstream Arab descent, but an indigenous (so-called Berber) Shawi who lives in this region, and it seems that she learned traditional music, which is her own roots, from her grandmother. However, she did not aim to be a professional musician from the beginning, and when she was young, she studied psychology in Paris and even took up teaching, but her passion for music never stopped and became active in the mid-80s, and she made her CD debut with a French folk music label in 1990. After that, after moving from one label to another, I arrived at the popular French label Accords Croises, which I still belong to, and the first work presented from there was “The Cavalry of Aures,” which was described above. After that, in 2013, “Renayate - Algerian Women's Songs” (HMR-7045) was released on the same label, and there they covered the repertoire of various traditional female singers who have been active in the same country.
And her latest work, which was released at the end of 2017, is this album. Until now, she has focused on numbers that live in her hometown of Aures, but this time, she has taken up a wide repertoire that has been popular all over Algeria, and the content introduces the geographical vastness of the country and the breadth of its culture. In terms of sound, the content makes me listen to it in a traditional and acustic ensemble that includes percussion types, including the mandor, string instruments such as Gunburi, oud, reed flutes, and Bendil, which Furia herself sings and hits. Furthermore, sometimes Furia, who has a traditional kobushi spin, performs a variety of musical styles, and entertains plenty of wonderful singing voices rooted in the traditions of the same region.
After a long absence, this work makes me feel the splendor and depth of Arab-Andalusian music. I recommend this comfortable album to anyone who truly loves world music.
