This main battle tank, along with the Type 10, also equipped the Ground Aggressor and Evaluation Support Unit. It was officially adopted as the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's third-generation tank in 1990.

The packaging features a new design featuring a newly drawn illustration by Mr. Kurokawa.
For ease of assembly, the molding color has been changed from the previous dark brown to a gray color for better visibility.
