This box set includes the TV version of the robot anime series, which began as an OVA in 1988 and expanded into other media, including a manga by Masami Yuki and a feature film directed by Mamoru Oshii, almost simultaneously. In the near future, general-purpose humanoid machines called Labors have become commonplace, but crimes using these Labors have also been rampant, leading to the police introducing Labors to prevent this. These Labors are commonly known as Patlabors.
While both the video and theatrical versions mainly deal with deviations from traditional police activities, the TV version depicts the Patlabor platoon's activities as extremely straightforward police officers, and the two versions complement each other to reveal the full picture of the Patlabor world.
