It was designated a traditional craft by the government in 1976 (Showa 51). The pottery, with its diverse shapes and expressions born from nature and artisans, is imbued with the sincerity and playfulness of masters who value "imbalance." The "Hechimon" (registered trademark) comes from a Shigaraki artisan's term meaning "unusual objects." The plump form and texture of the clay exude a warmth.
