This is the story of writer Lao Tao and his family, who emigrated from Nanjing to a rural village in Subei (northern Jiangsu Province) in 1969. Lao Tao, determined to "put down roots" in the village, built a house, planted trees and crops, and raised livestock, just like the other farmers. His wife, Su Qun, learned basic medical skills and began treating the villagers' illnesses. Their son, Xiao Tao, who had never experienced the hardships of his older brothers, also broadened his horizons and gradually matured.
