This is the second volume of The Tale of Genji, divided into two volumes. It includes chapters Wakana (first half) to Yume no Ukihashi (dream bridge). The Third Princess and Kashiwagi's affair, Murasaki no Ue's death, and Genji disappearing from the story. The story then shifts to the melancholy Uji chapters. Kaoru and Nioumiya's youth, the Uji princesses learning of a man's cold-heartedness, Kaoru and Nioumiya competing for Ukifune, and Ukifune's drowning... The truth of humanity emerges amidst the sorrow and despair.
