Review
This animated film was released in 2001. While many films based on well-received TV series often end up being poorly made, this one is a cut above the rest! The hard-boiled atmosphere masks the fact that it's a sci-fi film, with meticulous animation (such as the fighter jet dogfight in the second half, the climactic fight scene, and the characters' expressions) and art. The story is well-paced and leaves a lasting impression. The music is also cool and mature. The main characters, Koichi Yamadera and Megumi Hayashibara, as well as Renji Ishibashi, who plays the stingy robber at the beginning, are all superb! A must-see for anime fans. This is the film version of the sci-fi, hard-boiled action animation "Cowboy Bebop," which received rave reviews as a TV series. It depicts the exploits of bounty hunters in the solar system in 2071.
The film is set between Sessions 22 and 23 of the 26-episode TV series. Pursuing terrorists on Mars, regular cast members Spike, Jet, Faye, and Ed, as well as numerous original film characters, make an appearance and play a major role.
While the TV version easily maintained the quality of a theatrical film, the film version has been further refined. (Gen Tanaka)
