Among the DD51 locomotives that were active throughout Japan, this group can be broadly classified as non-double-heading type. Because it is not compatible with multiple-unit operation, it is characterized by its clean end beams and front handrails without jumper cables, and the two-leaf front inspection doors unique to the early models. All-warm climate type locomotives were mainly stationed in Kyushu and, in addition to pulling passenger and freight trains, also led the Blue Trains "Sakura," "Hayabusa," and "Akatsuki" that ran on the Nagasaki Main Line. In the 1970s, it was transferred to the Yonago depot and continued to operate on lines such as the Fukuchiyama Line and the San'in Main Line, before being retired by the time of the privatization of Japanese National Railways. This diesel locomotive is a perfect match for trains in West Japan and Kyushu during the Japanese National Railways era. It is also suitable as a traction engine for the "10-1872/1873 20 Series Sleeper Express 'Sakura' Nagasaki/Sasebo編成".
