3rd album by Leonardo Marquez, a home-recorded Brazilian SSW from Minas who is influenced by John Lennon and Elliot Smith and Jobin. A soft, dreamy sound that makes full use of vintage equipment, an infinitely sweet melody, and a somewhat paradisiacal atmosphere even though it was recorded at home... an extraordinary treasure that arrived from the depths of the earth at the end of 2018.

Brazil is Leonardo Marquez, a singer-songwriter born in Minas Gerais. In addition to being active in Transmisol, a band that is hugely popular with local Minas young people, he also released 2 solo albums himself. The previous work was also released as a Japanese edition, and they went on a tour to Japan. They performed a three-man concert with Japanese bands fascinated by Minus music such as Kisel and Tsuchiyani Bond, which left a vivid impression on people other than Brazilian music fans. Also, after working at a vintage musical instrument store in Los Angeles, he became fascinated by recording analog equipment, and managed his own studio “Ilha do Corvo” in Minas. He has worked on many recordings for young Brazilian musicians seeking vintage sounds, and has shown success as a record producer with eight sides and six arms.

Leonardo's first solo album in three years is “Early Bird.” Inspired by John Lennon, Elliot Smith, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and various works of the legendary local Minas music movement “Clubi da Esquina,” they composed a total of 9 songs in a relaxed atmosphere on a paradise island, played most of the instruments themselves, and recorded with vintage equipment. The world that combines an evergreen melody, a personal sense of distance unique to home recording, and the dreamy sound of vintage equipment is simply comfortable, and it's like being in a slumber. The artwork is probably a homage to Jobin's various A&M works, which he says were influenced during the production process of this work. If Jobim is “the ultimate healing music,” should this work even be called “the ultimate healing pop”? It is a masterpiece by a Brazilian singer-songwriter that I would recommend not only to Jobim and Clubi da Esquina fans, but also Chin Bernardez, called “Brian Wilson x Caetano Veloso,” which has become a big topic of conversation this year, and even to fans of John Lennon, Elton John, Elliot Smith, John Brion, and Mac DeMarco.
