[BIC History]
■ BIC: Pioneer of the Disposable Ballpoint Pen
In 1945, Marcel BIC and Édouard Buffard founded the writing instrument company BIC in France and began co-managing the company.
The ballpoint pen, invented by John J. Rood in the United States in 1888, was inherited by Hungarian inventor Ladislas Piro.
Foreseeing the great potential of the ballpoint pen, BIC purchased Piro's patent, continued to improve it, and released the world's first disposable ballpoint pen, the BIC Crystal.
With the slogan "A reliable ballpoint pen at an affordable price," the BIC brand quickly gained popularity.
Then, in 1961, the BIC Orange ballpoint pen, which remains a best-seller today, was introduced.
In 1970, the multi-color ballpoint pen was born.
[Big Boy, the Little Character]
Big Boy was designed in 1961 by Raymond Savignac, a renowned French poster artist who was working on BIC advertising at the time.
Aiming to draw children's attention to the new ballpoint pen, the character features a small elementary school student with a ballpoint pen head and a pen strapped to his back.
Since then, Big Boy has become a symbol of the BIC brand and is used with BIC products around the world.
