[Summary]
Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) was an ukiyo-e artist born at the end of the Edo period and living through the modernizing Meiji era. He's best known for his "Kosen-ga" series, which captures new landscapes with railroads, Western-style architecture, and gaslights. However, from the 1880s onward, he also began to create a diverse range of works, including war paintings, satirical illustrations, and classic landscape paintings. One such work is "One Hundred Views of Musashi," featured in this book.
"One Hundred Views of Musashi" is a series published between 1884 and 1889. Thirty-four prints have been identified, and this book includes 27 from the National Diet Library collection. The subject matter is from various areas of the former Musashi Province (although most of the work is actually Tokyo), depicting famous places, roads, temples, shrines, and riverside areas. The vertical composition, close-up zoom technique, bold composition, and the depiction of rain using diagonal lines, modeled after "A Thunderstorm on the Great Bridge and Atake," all show the influence of Utagawa Hiroshige's masterpiece, "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," and demonstrate the work's commitment to the ukiyo-e traditions of the time.
Enjoy the landscapes of early Meiji Tokyo, a time of modernization while still retaining Edo-period customs.
