Returning to the origins of narrative literature, The Tale of Genji.
Faithful to the text, yet easy to read.
The finest modern translation!
Genji welcomes Akashi no Ue no Ue's daughter to Nijō-in and arranges for her to be raised by Murasaki no Ue. The following year, his beloved Fujitsubo dies at age 37. Emperor Reizei is horrified when he learns the secret of his own birth from a monk at his residence. Meanwhile, Tamakazura, the daughter of the deceased Yugao, travels from Tsukushi to Kyoto and is welcomed into Rokujō-in. Now in her twenties, Tamakazura's beauty becomes more and more famous with each passing day. This marks the beginning of the Ten Chapters of Tamakazura.
The essay at the end of the book focuses on short sentences in The Tale of Genji, demonstrating that short sentences that suddenly appear in the midst of a continuous stream of text have important meaning and utility.
