SPC stands for SIBATA PRECISE CLEAR and is Shibata Scientific's original glass taper joint.
SPC joints are formed using Shibata Scientific's proprietary molding technology without sanding the joining surfaces. Because they are molded without sanding the glass's original smoothness, they offer a highly smooth surface that sets them apart from other surface-smooth joints, including transparent joints. SPC also offers unique advantages, such as a lower risk of contamination compared to surface-smooth joints.
While there may be slight dimensional discrepancies (length), they are generally compatible with surface-smooth joints. However, if SPC joints and surface-smooth joints are used together, the rough surface of the surface-smooth joints can scratch the SPC, compromising its high-smoothness characteristics and reducing the surface smoothness grade to that of surface-smooth joints. Although not recommended, when connecting SPC joints and ground joints, including clear joints, be sure to use vacuum grease (connecting without grease may result in leaks).
If the SPC joint is stuck and won't come loose, try wearing thick rubber gloves and gently twisting it. You can also try pouring hot water over the SPC joint or immersing it in a mild detergent. An ultrasonic cleaner may also be effective. If this doesn't work, please request repairs.
The lack of a shoulder makes it easy to remove samples and clean.
Since the liquid surface area increases when tilted, rotary evaporators use joints with ground joints.
[High-Precision Connection Using an SPC Joint] We use Shibata Scientific's original "SPC Joint" (SIBATA PRECISE CLEAR). This high-precision joint maintains the natural smoothness of glass without sanding.
[Reduced Contamination Risk] The highly smooth joint significantly reduces the risk of contamination compared to ground joints. Creates a hygienic and clean experimental environment.
[Easy-to-use design and high practicality] The lack of shoulders makes sample removal and cleaning easy. Taking advantage of the characteristic that the liquid surface expands when tilted, the ground joint type is also suitable for rotary evaporators.
[Compatible with ground joints (with caution)] Although there are slight differences in dimensions, they are generally compatible. However, when using them together, the rough surface of the ground joint may impair the highly smooth surface of the SPC joint, so we recommend using vacuum grease.
