This sci-fi robot action film is based on Mitsuteru Yokoyama's classic manga of the same name and is directed by the talented Mori Togashi, known for "Sorry." Sixth-grader Kaneda Shotaro (Ikematsu Sosuke) lost his scientist father (Abe Hiroshi) at a young age and lives with his mother (Yakushimaru Hiroko). One day, a black robot called Black Ox attacks Tokyo, injuring his mother. Shotaro is entrusted with piloting Tetsujin 28, a robot developed by his grandfather and father.
While shifting the setting from the original 1950s to the present day may seem a bit far-fetched, director Togashi has taken the risk and created a science fiction special effects film aimed at the current gaming generation. The special effects, with their emphasis on blue skies, also skillfully support the boy's coming-of-age story. The backgrounds, etc., are carefully designed to capture a strong Showa-era atmosphere, and the nostalgic theme song from the black-and-white anime version (the same as the 2004 TV anime version) plays at the end, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.
